Concert Crap: Can you give a brief history on Lushcamp?
Paul Matarelli: Eran and I first met back in the early 2000’s when he produced my demo in his studio. Since we went way beyond “demo” in terms of production, I decided to release it as an EP in 2013 (https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/someday-ep/id626910965).
Anyway, we were catching up for drinks in January of 2014 and I asked if he would be up for taking on a full album project. I had some songs I had been working on and was itching to get them out into the world. We got back in the studio and clicked like old times. You can pick up the record here: lushcamp.bandcamp.com
CC: Being from New York, has that helped or made it more difficult to grow in the world of music?
PM: I think living in New York helps you grow as a musician. On any given night you can go out and see performances from the best in the world, as well as your local groups. That kind of exposure can only help to inspire and show you what is possible.
CC: How did the city inspire your sound?
PM: A majority of what I write is a reflection of my experiences in NYC. Plus, I tend to walk a lot. More often than not I will get an idea for a song, whether a lyric, chord shift, etc., while walking the streets. That has an immense impact on the final sound. But another reason the city helps to inspire the sound is that a number of our influences on the record live and create here as well.
CC: If you could pick a place to grow your band even more, where would you pick and why?
PM: I think Nashville would be an amazing place to grow as an artist. The city has such a rich musical history. Everyone I talk to can’t say enough good things about the music scene, so that would definitely be a top pick.
CC: What current and past artists inspire your sound?
PM: Current artists that you can hear the influence on the album would be The National, Interpol, The Shins, and Ryan Adams. Past artists influence would be bands like The Cure, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.
CC: What does the rest of 2016 have in store for Lushcamp?
PM: I am currently in the process of putting together a full band so we can start playing out in the city. Lushcamp started as a studio project, but the next step is live shows.
CC: What hobbies do you have outside of music?
PM: I am a travel junkie. Always looking to explore and meet new people. I’m actually heading to Greece in two weeks so that is exciting. I am also into motorcycles which is a great way to see the world when you travel. I’ve also been surfing a lot more this year which has been incredible because I am actually catching waves now, as opposed to paddling around and wiping out all the time!
