Interview: Getting to know Weesp

Concert Crap: Can you talk about a brief history of the band?

Dmitry Budko: At the age of 15 Lex (vocals) came up with idea to create a band. His friend Mike (guitar) really liked this idea, even despite the fact that both of them couldn’t play any instrument nor sing. Then a little bit later in the local newspaper the guys decided to look for a bass player. Mi (bass) was found there.

Unfortunately Weesp had bad luck with drummers, changed them a lot, but after another casting Gul (drums) became a perfect addition in 2010.

Also, the guys decided to improve their electronics and that is why the twin brother of Mi – Stak (synth) joined in 2010 to form what is now known as WEESP.

CC: What does your band name mean?

DB: The name ‘Weesp’ came out just like that long time ago. We just wanted the name to be short and unobtrusive to avoid putting us in any musical style limits. We like it meaning nothing, but it’s just a name. Then we found that there is a small town called Weesp near Amsterdam. It was funny when a local news reporter contacted me for an interview and asked about our name and I had no idea such town even exists. Later we came there and even gave an interview to the local radio.

CC: Who are some of your musical inspirations?

DB: It comes from everyday. All the events and people around. We like catching a mood, a condition of mind, a feeling – you know, all those short moments when you feel alive. We make songs about it.

Our last album, The Void, is inspired by personal experiences and a great upheavals of each of us. I am confident that these feelings can be sensed and understood by our listeners. Therefore, we build an invisible bond with them.

CC: Who would you like to tour with realistically and unrealistically?

DB: There are so many bands, that we like! And almost every band from this giant list would be a pleasure to play with! From light rock and even pop, to doom and black metal! Realistically – we can play with a support band from Belarus.

And unrealistically – to go on tour with them. Yet, we do not enough fame to support any known band, but we’re working on it!

Of course we would like to play with bands like: Muse, Machine Head or Enter Shikari. And we will do it after some time for sure!

CC: What does the rest of 2016 have in store for you guys?

DB: We’re planning to release two of our songs called ‘Beware the Blind Spots” and the new one with no name  on Youtube.

New one – https://youtu.be/McDxG-Zp6Fk

“Beware the Blind Spots” – https://youtu.be/QN8R-TERne8

And in early 2017 we’re planning on starting to record a new album!

CC: Is there anything else you’d like to say to your fans or anyone that may be reading this interview at all?

DB: We love you, guys. Hope you’ll check out and enjoy our music! See you at our shows. Don’t hesitate to come to us to say that you’ve read this interview, and came because of it!
