Interview: Ben Hazlewood speaks on inspiration, Australia and more

Concert Crap: Can you give a brief history of your growing up and wanting to become a musician?

Ben Hazlewood: I had always been around music and performing growing up. My dad was a singer in bands back in the day so I took my lead from him. I started writing my own music at around 13 and it’s kept rolling since then.

CC: What inspires you as an artist?

BH: I predominately write about shit times that have been hard to deal with / get through. My music has always had a darker edge to it. Pain + Power.

CC: Do you find it difficult making a name for yourself in the industry being from Australia at all?

BH: No, I think that music is so accessible these days through social media that everyone is used to listening to great music from all around the world. I’m really lucky I have been able to tour in the U.S. as much as I have. Seeing a growing fan base at shows in a country that I don’t live in has been awesome.

CC: What is your favorite thing about being a musician?

BH: Performing live to people who connect with the music. That’s the reason why I do this. It is to create something that affects people.

CC: If you can switch places with any musician (alive or dead), who would it be and why?

BH: Mick Jagger – I want to be him to sing “Gimme Shelter” with Lisa Fischer (his back up singer) in a fuck off stadium.

CC: What are you hoping to accomplish in 2017?

BH: I am planning on touring my ass off this year in Australia and the U.S. Get on the road and promote my new EP EOS with the lead single “Sail Away”. I’m really pumped to be releasing this record very soon.

CC: Why should people care about Ben Hazlewood?

BH: Well… if they want to hear music that’s powerful and emotive then they should check it out. Hopefully they experience something that makes them care.

CC: Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans or anyone reading this interview right now?

BH: Me and my band sound awesome live, if we are near you come out and see it!
