Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! started off their headlining tour on Saturday at Chain Reaction. No one, not even the bands on the bill, anticipated the audiences response to Chunk’s set.
“We had no idea the kids would be going this wild,” said In Her Own Words bassist Eric Ruelas. “There were so many things going on tonight: All Time Low, The Story So Far in Ventura, the [Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquaio] fight, Cinco De Mayo parties. The list goes on, yet all these kids came full with energy and we couldn’t be any more thankful for that response. It was the best way to kick of the tour.”
Chunk! No, Captain Chunk brought Ice Grills (Japanese distribution) label mates In Her Own Words as opening support for the tour. To The Wind, Forever Came Calling and Hit The Lights also were invited as support for the tour.
Many fans came to see the bands on the bill, but there was a concentrated group that set out to do more. This group referred to this goal as the “#EZRevival2k15,” a social media movement to revive the once popular genre of easycore and distribute music in that genre to the masses.
“This is great. Keep up this revival, because this is awesome,” said Chunk! No, Captain Chunk vocalist Bert Ponce to the crowd. “This was one of our goals for the night and honestly, this has been the best show we have ever played.”
Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! played a setlist to the crowd that included songs from both “Something for Nothing” and “Pardon My French.” In addition, the band played two new singles from their upcoming album “Get Lost, Find Yourself.”
The show ended in the most upbeat way possible. The band played an encore set that included the songs “Reset” and “In Friends We Trust.” For their final song, vocalist Bert Poncet asked for as many attendants as possible to come up on stage and take a selfie with him. Chain Reaction has no barrier and, for the most part, a lenient security staff, which made this process possible.
The diverse list of bands that played that night also made the memorable. The lineup was predominantly pop punk, however, elements of both easycore and hardcore made up for interesting variations between sets.
What ultimately made the show was the crowd’s response. The bands came from places far and wide to play for an audience of roughly 200 people and these attendants did not disappoint. Fans brought handmade props and t-shirts to support and celebrate the “#EZRevival2k15”
