Everclear released their new live album, Live at The Whisky a Go Go, on September 8th. It features 14 songs recorded at the world-famous Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, CA. In addition to the live recording, two new studio recordings are also included. The album is available via Sunset Blvd Records on CD and 2-LP green vinyl.
The alternative rock band was formed in 1992 by the sole remaining original member Art Alexakis (vocals/guitar). After several changes, the current lineup consists of Alexakis along with Davey French (guitar), Freddy Herrera (bass), Brian Nolan (drums). Over the last 30 years the band has released 11 studio albums which have sold 6 million copies and produced 14 top 40 songs.
Live at The Whisky a Go Go will bring back memories for many people. I remember cruising to many of these songs before the days of streaming. The album opens with an intro by former MTV VJ and radio host Matt Pinfield. Everclear had a large selection of songs to choose from their illustrious career. They chose to focus on the early years performing songs that even non-fans would recognize. It’s hard to go wrong with songs like “Everything To Everyone”, “Father of Mine”, “Wonderful”, and their first #1 hit “Santa Monica”.
Everclear also included two studio recordings, “Year Of The Tiger” and “Sing Away” on the album. “After all of the events of the last almost 3 years with Covid, worldwide shutdowns, the political debacle of 2020…emanating from in and outside of MAGA world, I felt I needed to write a song that not just explained my anger and frustration, but a song that served as a mission statement,” shares Alexakis, who was also born in a Year of the Tiger in 1962. “I feel like the tiger should be the new symbol of the new Democratic party. We will not back down, we will not forget, we hit back, we challenge lies, and we refuse to be intimidated by ignorance or loud voices. To quote the song’s lyrics, ‘Here we are in the Year of the Tiger, we are where we are because of all the big lies.’ Tigers are everywhere.”
“I had heard about this little boy who had a colostomy bag because of issues that he had been born with, and he had gotten bullied so bad that he went home and killed himself. I mean, he was 10 years old,” Alexakis shared with PEOPLE about one of the many stories that inspired him to write ‘Sing Away. “As a parent, I don’t see how you go on living. I really don’t know how you go on.” He added, “When it came time to put out this live record, I wanted to record ‘Sing Away’ with Everclear because it has always felt like an Everclear song. I wanted to do it really heavy. And so, we did, and I just love the way it came out.”
In addition to the album Everclear has also launched a Fall headlining tour, with support from The Ataris and The Pink Spider. The 27-city tour runs through mid-October. Tickets can be purchased here.
