Crappy Concert Moments: Drummer Tyler Zarzeka

I used to play for the band Emblem3, and was running tracks from a computer that was sitting right next to my drums. For those of you who aren’t aware, most every pop-act has a computer that runs the show. That gives us a metronome throughout the entire show and has instruments in it that might not be able to perform with the limited band members that are on stage. That being said, the computer is very important. Certain songs might require a tambourine, background vocals or harmonies, extra guitar parts, and even drum samples. The computer can even run a video panel or lighting show in time with the music. So if the computer were to stop in the middle of a song, that would be very bad.

Cut to the middle of my tour with Emblem3, we were in the middle of one of their songs and one of my sticks broke. Which is completely normal, except, the broken piece decided to fly and hit the spacebar of the computer – stopping the computer! There was nothing I could do, I just had a minor panic attack followed by pure laughter. All I could do was keep playing the song and fix the problem after that song. The lesson to be learned is NEVER have a show computer near a drum set, the rest of the tour the keyboardist ran the computer.
