The Church packed a full house Sunday night at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, California. The Australian rock band just released their latest album The Hypnogogue and are currently on a North American tour. They are popular for hits such as “Reptile” and “Under the Milky Way.” In recent years, their music formed a cult following in the goth and TikTok diverse community.

It was an overcast day since the venue is near the beautiful Pacific Ocean. The light rain, essence of tranquility that walks among the roads. It made a perfect match for the event waiting ahead. Deep-rooted fans started lining up in front of the doors within the hour of opening. There were still people trying their best to snag a stub as a last-minute hope. The tavern filled to its full capacity.

The flashing blue lights turned off and it was showtime. They opened up their twenty-one-song set list with “Ascendance” descending into their recent single “C’est La Vie.” Tracks were played from The Hypnogogue, Starfish and Of Skin and Hearts. Singer Steve Kilbey‘s wholesome yet timeless vocals, witty charm and uproarious jokes kept the attentive audience hankering until the very end. Their collective energy and showmanship made one heck of a night.

No need for openers, The Church is back and bigger than ever.
