Concert Review: KROQ Weenie Roast 2017 in Carson, California

Every year LA radio station KROQ throws a festival which unofficially starts summer. The whole thing is always super fun and the bands are always killer. This year Weenie Roast took place at StubHub Center in Carson, CA; it’s former home Irvine Meadows Amphitheater closed in fall of 2016. The lineup this year consisted of Dreamcar, Lana Del Rey, Paramore, Imagine Dragons, Incubus and Lorde, to name a few.

Starting off the night was Dreamcar, which is a supergroup that consists of all of the guys from No Doubt minus Gwen, but adding Davey Havoc from AFI. They played most of their new songs from their self-titled debut album. After Lana Del Rey performed, I wasn’t a fan of her set personally but to each their own.

Paramore came on and absolutely killed it! They played a mix of old and new songs. They got the whole stadium up and off their seats and moving around. Not only did they get everyone moving but they also looked genuinely happy to be there. A little later in the night Imagine Dragons came on. They had super cool lasers pointing all over the stadium and lit up the stadium with songs like “It’s Time” and “Radioactive”.

Incubus took the stage as the second to last band and they played through their older classic songs as well as those from their new album 8. The best moment of the night came during their set when they payed tribute to the late Chris Cornell. Lead singer Brandon Boyd brought out Matt Schultz from Cage The Elephant, who performed earlier in the night, to sing “Black Hole Sun”. Everyone in the stadium sang along word for word with the band and I’m sure Chris Cornell would’ve been thrilled to hear them singing together.

Lorde headlined and played a great set playing some songs old and new. She had some technical problems but she didn’t let that bring her down.

This was the 25th anniversary of KROQ’s Weenie Roast and to have kept it going for this long is really impressive. Out of all the radio festivals KROQ always has one of the best lineups every year. Weenie Roast this year was for sure one that you shouldn’t have missed.
