CC: Can you give us a little history of how you guys came to be and what you’re all about?
We’re a rock ‘n roll band from Detroit. We started off as your typical high school rock band and over the years we’ve developed our own sound playing around town and regionally. We finished our debut album last year and it will be out in August via Wind-up Records.
CC: What exactly is your newest single “Go (Let Me Save You)” all about?
“Go (Let Me Save You)” is the first song we wrote together after Sam (drummer) joined the band. We wrote it the same day as the Sandy Hook tragedy. [Singer and guitarist] Josh [LeMay] wrote the lyrics as a response to what he was seeing on TV as the media reported live from the scene. To us, “Go (Let Me Save You)” is about the media not respecting boundaries and operating with their own political agendas while having no regard for ethics of any kind.
CC: Are you planning on making a video for the song?
Yeah. We’re shooting in the next couple weeks and it will be out later this summer!
CC: Can you talk about your upcoming August release State of Mind?
We wrote and recorded State of Mind at a very volatile time in our lives. It’s been done for almost two years and we’ve been sitting on it, wondering if it would ever see the light of day. It just got a final mix and master a few weeks ago and it turned out better than we could have ever anticipated. We can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
CC: What has been the feedback to new fans that hear you guys for the first time?
It’s been very positive so far. “Go (Let Me Save You)” has just started getting radio play around the US and no matter where we’ve played in the past month, people in every city have come to see us live after hearing the song just one time on the radio. It feels like a dream.
CC: What sets Citizen Zero apart from other bands and artists out there?
We want to bring the “roll” back to rock ‘n roll. We’re a modern rock band that grew up on the classics – Stone Temple Pilots, Van Halen, etc. We want to be the band that brings four guys playing live instruments back to the mainstream.
CC: What has been your best memory thus far in as a citizen of Citizen Zero?
We’ve collected a lot of great memories over the years. It’s hard to choose, but a few recent memories come to mind. We opened for Pop Evil last weekend in Lancaster, OH and there were fans in the front row singing all of the lyrics to “Go (Let Me Save You)”. To show up in a town that you’ve never played and have people sing your songs along with you is better than any drug in world.
CC: Being such a young band, what have you learned in this day and age that may set you apart from others trying to accomplish the same goals and dreams?
When it comes to your own art and expression, you can never let anyone tell you they know better than you. Coming up, everyone had an opinion of who we should sound like, write like, etc., but at the end of the day, you have to follow your heart. When you do, you find your own sound and ultimately, your own place in the cosmos.
CC: If you could bring one musician that is not with us anymore to play one show with Citizen Zero, who would you bring back to life and why?
John’s brother, Matt Dudley, passed away in 2012. To play show a with him once more would be beautiful.
CC: Any last thoughts?
