Don Broco – Technology
British band Don Broco dominated the American scene this year with the memorable release of their album Technology, out February 2. The 16 tracks are a fun musical ride from first song “Technology” to “Potty Mouth,” the last track. It has a variety of elements and inspirations that keep it refreshing every time you listen to it, even if it is played on a weekly basis. Technology is truly one of the best albums of the year.
Orphaned Land – Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs
Orphaned Land is a band that has been around for over 20 years, but Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs, released January 26, took the band to another level musically. It keeps the same elements that the Israeli oriental metal band is known for, but also added in an edge that was not seen in their previous albums; the sheer diversity of musical sounds and inspirations in this album is astounding. The songs on the album differ drastically in length; “The Cave” runs for over eight minutes while “Yedidi” runs for less than three, but all 13 tracks work together. Unsung Prophets and Dead Messiahs is the band’s best release of their career and one of the best albums that was released this year.
Kip Moore – Room to Spare: The Acoustic Sessions
Kip Moore is one of the best country musicians in the game. Room to Spare: The Acoustic Sessions came about after Moore promised fans that he would release an acoustic album and this one does not disappoint in the least. “Plead the Fifth” acoustic overshadows the original on Slowheart. The remaining six tracks are all beautifully written and arranged; “Love You To The Moon” and “Come Home with You” are also favorites. It is a remarkable album that shows off Moore’s impressive talents. It is soulful, beautifully simple, and never boring. Moore has consistently released music that gets better and better and this album is no exception.
Netta – “Toy”
Netta blasted onto the scene when she won Eurovision 2018. The video for “Toy” has almost 100 million views on YouTube at time of writing. This song is just pure fun, chicken noises and all. Originally written about the “Me, Too” movement, it is empowering without being overbearing. “Toy” mixes pop influences with a classic Middle Eastern sound to create something that is unique and not often heard in pop music. It is the perfect track to play to pump you up before a night out or to make the drive home easier. No matter why you listen to this track, you will not be able to keep yourself from singing “I’m not your toy, you stupid boy” at the top of your lungs every single time.
