Gojira – Magma
The French metal band did it again after four years. Since Le’Enfant Souvage, they released their sixth studio album which manages to defy their uniqueness fusing multiple genres within metal. Since the bandmates Joe and Mario Duplantier’s mother passed during the early demo stages of Magma, this album became “therapy” for them which screams pure emotion through eccentric unorthodox riffs. Each and every track conveys a different aura.
Metallica – Hardwired…To Self-Destruct
Eight years later and the infamous metal band comes back with their tenth studio album and it is staggering. This album is split into two parts and it will satisfy any Metallica fan who craves their classic sounds a good fix. It has a balanced mixture of rock and thrash that this epic band is known for. On top of it, they have produced music videos for all of the tracks!
Animals As Leaders – The Madness of Many
Their fourth album is amazing – their instrumental skills are nothing less of being magnified here. There is a great mix of progressive, djent (of course), jazz and electronic; not only this, but a lot of cultural influenced sounds that can be heard throughout the entire album. If you want to rock out and be nonetheless impressed by these technically talented beasts of musicians, this album is perfect.
David Bowie – Blackstar
The rock legend’s 25th studio album is one of the last remnants left by him right before passing this year and it is nothing less of astounding; he knew his time of departure was arriving and he left us with this beautiful Blackstar. This seven track album is filled with eccentric rock, jazz and electronic melodies. Moreover, Bowie’s brilliant unique accents are undeniable here. This entire album is just fascinating – with the sense of morbid death and calamity. It glimmers with whimsical beauty.
Opeth – Sorceress
The Swedish metal band came back this year expressing their growth and progression towards the contemporary, yet classic dimensions of progressive doom metal. With Opeth’s distinguished complex structures of composition and melody, they seemed to inject a groovy feel from the 60’s and 70’s throughout the entire album. If you want a taste of some progressive, doom, grunge metal mixed with some Jimmy Hendrix and Bowie, say hello to Sorceress.
