Bearings Might Be The Next Great Canadian Pop-Punk Band With New Album The Best Part About Being Human

Ottawa-based Bearings released their latest album The Best Part About Being Human on August 18, 2023 via Pure Noise Records. The album was produced by Sam Guiana who has previously worked with bands such as Silverstein and Between You & Me. This is the third album by the pop-punk band. Prior to its release, the shared the singles “Gone So Gone”, “Live Forever Never Die,” and “Slip”.

I had a long 8-hour drive back from Tampa, so I decided to give the album a listen. Even though pop-punk is my favorite genre, this was my first exposure to the band. After giving it a couple of plays, I came away really liking the album.

The Best Part About Being Human starts off strong with the first song “Scenery”. This is probably my favorite song on the album. It’s a catchy tune that has its Blink-182 moments that will definitely make my punk-punk playlist.

I’m not a big country fan but I do like Florida Georgia Line. “Slip” sounds like a song that could have been recorded by the superstar country band. It’s probably my second favorite song on the album. “Slip was something that came together on its own,” says the band. “The chorus sort of has that country sway to it and the versus tell a story about the wonder and fragility of life. The feelings of loving, but knowing you can never be perfect for that person or rather perfect for anyone as you’re only human. Looking into others experiences and how they found their way through the ups and downs together and what that might have looked like.”

“The Best Part About Being Human is being alive and the second best part is writing an upbeat and exciting record with your brothers in a small house in North Hollywood,” says the band. “This record was us figuring out what we really wanted to play live, what got us excited, and I think we found that.”

They continue, “It had to be something we could play in its entirety live if we wanted and it would work. It’s got melancholy chorus’s and the wordy verses. It really feels like we were able to experiment while also honing in on what we do well and creating something both us and our fans will be proud of.”

Canada is the land of pop-punk with great artists like Sum-41, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, and Silverstein amongst many others. After three albums, Dougie Cousins (vocals), Ryan Culligan (guitar), Ryan Fitz (guitar), Collin Hanes (bass) and Mike McKerracher (drums) are proving they deserve to be included in this group.
