Artists You Need To Know / Interview: – Yoel Genin

Yoel Genin is a truly prolific artist. The Israeli-born musician grew up playing a multitude of instruments, from piano to drums to trumpet until he found his love for the guitar around age 12. Genin eventually made his way to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he received a Bachelor’s in jazz composition and has since performed with a multitude of different musicians.

Today, you can find Genin performing with the Berklee Indian Ensemble, falafel-djent band HAGO, Israeli progressive metal band Distorted Harmony (who performed at ProgPower 2017), and Dashina, a project that combines musicians and influences from all over the world to create really interesting music. To get to know Yoel Genin better, I had him answer some questions:

Concert Crap: What’s on your playlist right now?

Yoel Genin: Tigran Hamasyan, Mr. Bill, Alon Mor.

CC: What weird or useless talent do you have?

YG: I became really good at making hummus since I moved to the US. The lack of good hummus pushed me to the edge. If music doesn’t work out – hummus it is.

CC: What do you actually think about when you’re onstage?

YG: “How is that drummer here again??” Yogev (Drummer for HAGO) and I are sharing probably more than half our bands, so he’s always there haha- HAGO, Distorted Harmony, Berklee Indian Ensemble. But he’s awesome so I don’t really mind (;
But seriously, just trying to have as much fun as possible, enjoying the music and the peak of hard work that’s being done towards any concert. It varies between heavy headbanging in Distorted Harmony concerts and Zen-like happiness with the Berklee Indian Ensemble – and that’s why I love doing all these very different things.

CC: If you were in a comic book, would you be a hero or a villain, what would be your name, and what would be your ability?

YG: When I was 4 I remember making up my own comic book hero character, his name was Launtman (in a French accent, because my mom talked to me in French when I was a kid – totally failed later – didn’t remember anything) and I have no idea what he could do. Maybe that’s my useless talent.

CC: If you could visit any fictional world, where would you go and why?

YG: Tralfamadore. It’s the alien planet in the book SlaughterHouse 5. Must be a cool place and their perception of time is awesome. It even became one of my compositions’ title for the HAGO album.

CC: What decade has the best music?

YG: 2020. Always looking forward and waiting for the newest music to blow my mind.

CC: Pizza or falafel?

YG: FALAFEL. Double the hummus. Triple the Tahini. And only in Israel.
