Do you know what falafel djent is? I’d never heard of it before I discovered HAGO. HAGO is a progressive metal band based in Boston, but their influences come from the band member’s Middle Eastern origins, to metal, to jazz, and more, hence the falafel djent genre.

HAGO started when a few of the members met back in Israel, but didn’t come to fruition until a few years later when all of the members were at Berklee College of Music together. The band’s formation came about pretty naturally, as bassist Guy and guitarist Yoel were roomates. Their music came from projects they were working on as part of their Berklee curriculum. Eventually, the band was completed with drummer Yogev, saxophonist Nerya, and keyboardist Tom. As the band developed and the music continued to be written, HAGO found themselves with enough content for an album.

Inspiration for the album came from Tigran Hamasyan, Meshuggah, Textures, Dream Theater, Laco Tayfa, and Israeli music. Most of the album is instrumental and features special guests Vasilis Kostas on the lauto, Ron Warburg on the trumpet, Yshai Afterman on percussion, and The Quintet (Merry Ann Genin, Ilan Kleiman, Lexi Pelton, Eilon Freeman, Or Hasson) on strings. There is one song that features guest vocalists Parham Haghighi, Inna Dudukina, Dana Protsenko, and Harshitha Krishnan that is sung completely in Hebrew. After a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the album, HAGO is looking at releasing the album tentatively in late 2017 or early 2018.

The future of the band is slightly uncertain at the moment, but they hope to soon solidify their lineup and head out on tour. In the meantime, keep an eye out for their album release, because it’s sure to be a treat to the ears. Don’t believe me? Check out their Facebook page and listen for yourself; you won’t be disappointed!
