Album Review: Theory of a Deadman – ‘Say Nothing’

On January 31, Theory of a Deadman released their seventh studio album, Say Nothing. This record opens with “Black Hole In Your Heart,” which starts with a dramatic sound and is filled with an extended metaphor woven throughout its lyrics. “History of Violence” was the first single released off of the album, and it came out on September 25th, 2019. It’s a catchy song that talks about domestic violence. The lyrics in “Affluenza” are so vivid that the first time I listened to the song, I paid attention only to them and not how well they fit in with the sound of the song. The title track was also released ahead of the rest of the album, on December 13th.

“Strangers” is another song with lyrics that perfectly illustrate a story. It was released in November, and its chorus is super easy to pick up and sing along to. “Ted Bundy” is a catchy love song with something more sinister behind its lyrics. One of my favorite songs on Say Nothing is “World Keeps Spinning,” which talks of, simply, how the world still goes on around you. “Quicksand” and “White Boy” are two other songs that talk about the issues going on in our world today. The last track, “It’s All Good,” ends the album on a happier, more upbeat note. The sound of this song makes me want to smile every time I hear it.

Overall, Say Nothing is a fairly short album, as it’s just about 35 minutes long. Even though it’s only ten songs long, Theory of a Deadman manages to tell a story in every one of those songs. Each track is visual and vivid, and you’ll want to listen to the album, again and again, to pick up more of its meaning.
