Album Review: The New Age – “Placebo”

The New Age - "Placebo"

Placebo, the debut full-length album from Columbus, Ohio band The New Age is amazing. The first track, “Wicked Friends,” immediately grabs your attention and makes you want more. This song is one of the best on the entire album. It starts off with some relatively calm and quiet clean singing. Then the screams hit and jolt you a little bit in the perfect way. This track was genius for the opening number because it packs a punch and makes you want to continue listening to the rest of the album. There is also some really cool guitar in this song.

From “Wicked Friends,” the album launches into “Temper,” with its sinister siren noise in the intro. You get those really fast and hard drums, along with even more screams. The common themes in this album are some cool guitar in each song, really good drums, and excellent vocals that switch back and forth from clean singing to screaming and back. The chorus in “To Be Alive” is going to be a hard one to get out of your head. Title track “Placebo” starts off a little bit differently than the rest of the album, softer and quieter, but goes hard and heavy very soon after. There is also an interesting little rapped part that really helps to drive home the message of both the song and the album. “Placebo” is another highlight on this album.

Placebo is not a boring album in the least. Each track gives you a little special treat, whether it is a guitar bit, something small right before the chorus, or a scream that comes out of nowhere. This is a great album, especially for a debut. It keeps you on your toes and keeps you listening. The New Age have done a fantastic job and Placebo is highly recommended.
