It’s been quite a while since I listened to The Classic Crime, I discovered them a few years ago and I’ve always thought of them as an awesome band. I dove back in to their music when I was given the opportunity to review their new album How To Be Human, out April 28th on BC Music. This will be the follow up album to Phoenix and is the bands first album in five years. Half a decade is quite a long time and it gave the band a chance to live and experience new things. Those new things ranged from getting married to having kids and even starting businesses.
How To Be Human consists of 12 awesome tracks from start to finish. It begins with an introduction which is calm and goes straight into the track “Holy Water”. Right off the bat this song is catchy and you should be immediately hooked. “I’m Not Done With You Yet” is next up and this was one of my favorite tracks on the whole album. The song sounds as if it deals with life and the things that come along with it. Everything from being on the road to dealing with personal flaws are talked about.
Lyrically, the song that stuck out to me the most was called “Wonder”, the seventh song. “Wonder why the wonder died in me” was the lyric that stayed with me the whole time I listened to this album. Lead singer Matt MacDonald sings about, as you may have guessed, wondering about things that he’s experienced in his life and the consequences that come along with them. It also seems that there’s some singing about the future and life evolving.
The very last track on the album is called “Black & White”. It’s the heaviest song on the album and one of the longest. When it starts, you’re not expecting it be heavy at all because it’s just MacDonald and a guitar. This song sounds like it’s building up to something, as you feel some pressure from the guitar as the song goes on. Around the 2:30 mark, the buildup stops and the song slowly begins to get heavier. The line “Am I alone?” is screamed at the end of the song and then the strings come back in and the song fades out and it’s over.
For any fans that have been waiting for five years to hear new music from The Classic Crime, you won’t be disappointed. MacDonald took a different approach when writing this album, he did it from the ground up, drums and bass first and it payed off.
