It’s hard to find a true hard rock band nowadays, and especially a good one. So many veer towards the heavy metal or even pop side of things. Smile Empty Soul is one of those bands that you can trust to product good, hard rock music time after time, and their new album Rarities is no exception.
This is the band’s eighth studio release. Rarities is actually a collection of music that the band had previously recorded over the years, but never released until now. The fact that Smile Empty Soul has overcome so many challenges in their professional career over the years, but still managed to retain that honest sound, the one that says “I don’t care who you are, I’m staying true to myself” is a true testament to the dedication of the band to what they do. This dedication is what separates the good bands from the great and makes Rarities such a fantastic album.
Some stand outs on the album are “One at a Time,” “Alone” and “Possession” (Sarah McLachlan cover), although you’d be hard-pressed to find a bad song on this album.
Smile Empty Soul lives up to their reputation of being one of the hardest-working bands in the business, as many songs on Rarities almost seem like they wouldn’t work together, but somehow it all comes together perfectly.
