Paul Johnson and The About Last Nights’ Give Up The Ghost is an exciting, high-spirited album filled with songs that you’ll be playing so loudly, your neighbors will be dancing along with you. “American Story (Adrenaline)” is a perfect example. Try listening to that song for more than 30 seconds without your foot tapping. It’s just not possible. 45 seconds in, you’ll be out of your chair and by the time the song has been on for a minute, you’ll be dancing (if you can even hold out that long). This song is full of imagery to the point that it causes a music video to play in your head; if you don’t see a video in your head while listening to this song, you’re obviously not listening to it loud enough.
“Burn It Down” is another great song. It burrows its way into your head. The lyrics are easy to sing along with, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s relatable. And once the guitar starts with the “oh-woh-oh-oh,” you just turn the music up as high as you can, get up, and start clapping and jumping. The music on this EP does not let you sit still.
The vocals are a little rough in that perfect way, the guitar screams, the bass thumps, and the drums pound. Give Up The Ghost by Paul Johnson and The About Last Nights is power pop at its finest and an EP you need in your collection.
