Album Review: New Years Day – “Diary of a Creep EP”

Diary of a Creep

On January 26, New Years Day released their EP, Diary of a Creep. They are definitely not new to the scene, as this group from California have previously put out three full-length albums, and quite a few EPs. This EP only has six songs on it. Just one of those is a new song, and the other five are covers.

“Disgust Me” is the only original song on the EP. After a few seconds of guitars, the song immediately gets heavier. It has a very catchy beat and is familiar from the first time you listen to it. “Disgust Me” definitely sounds like other New Years Day songs, but it improves upon their past work. The next song is “Bizarre Love Triangle,” first done by New Order. This song really works well with Ash Costello’s voice. When New Years Day was at Rock Allegiance outside of Philadelphia this past October, they performed a cover of Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile.” The song translated over nicely to a live setting.

Linkin Park was really the first band that I ever got into, so listening to covers of them is always interesting. Some can be good, and some can be bad. I really like New Years Day’s take on “Crawling.” They change up the beat of the sound at some points, but it definitely grows on you. Lzzy Hale from Halestorm is featured on the next track, “Only Happy When It Rains,” originally performed by Garbage. The vocals from the two women complement each other well. The EP closes with “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt. This cover is a very satisfying take on the song, one that I want to keep listening to. It’s heavier and I definitely prefer it to the original.

While Diary of a Creep may be a bit hard to properly judge, since the majority of its tracks are cover songs, I feel that the band did a good job on each song. New Years Day took each track and made it their own, but they didn’t make them unrecognizable. If you’re in the mood to listen to some of your favorite tracks done over in a new way, then definitely check out this EP.
