Four albums in and it appears Neck Deep has figured out where they wish to go with their sound and gorgeously shed their generic pop-punk skin to create their newest album All Distortions Are Intentional. The album was created to tell the story of fictional characters, Jett and Alice, through the make-believe world of Sonderland and the existential adventures that take place. Take that as you will but there is a great nod to a more storytelling aspect when analyzing the lyrical decisions made throughout the record and was a fact that I deeply enjoyed. The album can be moved through practically seamlessly, there is a clear connection on the surface between all of the songs which are truly a catch-22.
Although the album is cohesive and thought out this storytelling direction that the album has gone with has led to many of the songs sounding incredibly similar to one another. Don’t get me wrong this album is a wonderful follow up to the incredibly successful The Peace And The Panic however it took me a few listens to really start falling in love with All Distortions Are Intentional and even more to be able to pick a favorite song and even now I’m having issues with how overproduced and forced the vocals are.
The second half of the record is seemingly far superior to the first half and do not get me started on my feelings in regard to “Quarry” the clear divider of themes and stories in Sonderland. I much prefer what follows that track to the rest of the album.
There is a certain calm that comes with a cliche Neck Deep song but I feel that the opening track “Sonderland” and “Fall” fall too far in the comfort of this trope and stray too far from Neck Deep and a little closer to One Direction. However when talking with Kerrang back in June drummer Dani Abasi stated that the band was “trying to present our sound, as individuals and as a band, in a way that is palatable to a bigger audience” so I suppose that they have achieved their goal but it seems to lead to a less authentic-sounding song.
More All Time Low then Neck Deep overall I was not disappointed by the record and it will make its way onto my Spotify especially the tracks “I Revolve (Around You)” and “Sick Joke” for lyrics and style in comparison to the rest of the record. However, there is a certain lackluster for me from this album that I didn’t deal with in their same record that contained some similar pop influences and will sadly most likely get boring for me quite quickly.
