After listening to the first track, “Three Days,” on But I’ve Seen The Stars by Mike Mangione & The Kin, I was sure they had put their best song up first and I was right. “Three Days” is an absolutely beautiful song with harmonies that are just out of this world. It’s soulful and tells a story that I want to listen to over and over; the song almost leaves you in tears. The strings are amazing and work with the guitar perfectly, but nothing overtakes the lyrics; the music and lyrics are in sync the entire time. This song is absolutely my favorite on the entire album.
I will admit that I thought the rest of the album was going to go downhill very fast, but the rest of the songs are very good. “Promised Land” is a great song on this album. It’s subtle, but what I really like is that it doesn’t get boring; the entire song has little surprises throughout, whether it be a specific note sung by the vocalist, or a little part on the strings, or something that you can’t exactly identify as either a backup vocal or another instrument. “Riding Down” is a little more fast-paced and really fun. The song dips down to quiet, then charts up to loud and strong, then goes back down. It’s soulful and will definitely have you singing along to it.
But I’ve Seen The Stars has a great mix of songs, from the quiet to the upbeat and everything in between. The entire album is soulful and just full of good music.
