Album Review: Michael Tyler – “317”

Hot newcomer Michael Tyler is on track to become the next big country music superstar with the release of his album 317.

Tyler was already an accomplished songwriter before releasing his debut album and it shows in the music. Each song on the album is thought out from the first note to the last; it doesn’t feel like he’s experimenting and trying to find his niche, which many debut albums suffer from. The album’s strength lies in these fully fleshed-out songs. Since Tyler already has this deceptively elusive talent already down, one can only imagine how great his future releases will be as well.

317 is a country album, but it will not deter fans of other genres to listen to it. Much like Sam Hunt or Brett Eldredge, Tyler has a young, fun sound that will appeal to the audience that wants to let loose and have fun. Songs like “Here’s to the Nights,” “Good at Being Young,” and “Play That Party Song” are the perfect songs for that audience. The edge on this album comes from the sophisticated writing that went into it, heard most superbly in “Songs About Missouri” and “Interstate.”

With such great songwriting, anything else would really be considered just a bonus, and this album has plenty of those. The vocals are skillfully executed and there are some guitar solos that would put rock stars to shame. There’s a great balance between the music and the lyrics. The music never overwhelms Tyler’s singing, keeping the focus squarely on him.

There’s no better way to describe 317 other than to say that Michael Tyler poured his heart and soul into it. It’s an album that will resonate with listeners. With all of the charisma of Luke Bryan, Michael Tyler is sure to go far and 317 is only the start of what is sure to be a great career.
