On July 21st, rap rock artist Manafest released his ninth studio album, Stones. Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Chris Greenwood has been releasing music since the early 2000s, wavering between rap and rock. This most recent release definitely fits into the “rock” genre, with a couple of songs off of it getting airplay on hard rock radio stations across the country already.
The album opens with “Stones,” a song that can be heard being played on the Sirius XM hard rock station, Octane. It begins with a slow beat before going into a catchy, faster rhythm. This is definitely a song that works great to pump you up. “Firestarter” begins with the lyrics “I wanna be a firestarter, you can help me if you wanna. We can spread and make the whole world light up.” For some reason, the chorus seems really familiar to me, but I just can’t think of the song that it reminds me of. “You’re Gonna Rise” has a slow, instrumental beginning. The lyrics start and the song stays slow, but it feels like the tempo will speed up at any moment.
“Blow You Away” is a very fast paced song. It opens with the words “gotta wake up” being whispered. This may be my favorite song on the album, and it got stuck in my head as soon as I heard it the first time. The next song, “Coming Back,” has a sound that is somewhat reminiscent of P.O.D.’s. The lines “this is my pain, this is my cry, this is my hope when I need a sign,” really stand out to me. The last song on the album, “Won’t Give Up,” has an electronic theme in the beginning that continues throughout the song. There is a strong rap sound heard in the verses. The album comes to a close after one last repetition of “I won’t give up.”
This is an album that you will want to reply over and over again, and not get tired of any song you hear. The different genres blended make for a record that fits together perfectly.
