Album Review: Arran Fagan – “Weight of Time”

I absolutely cannot stand folk music. I just cannot listen to it. So when I first turned on Arran Fagan’s album Weight of Time, I did not want to like it at all. It was towards the end of title track “Weight of Time,” that part that has a little bit of piano, that I started realizing that this album was not bad. “Weight of Time” slips into the second track, “Election Night,” really smoothly; I honestly would not have noticed the transition if I had not been paying attention. By the time this album was over, I loved every single song.

What I noticed right away was that there’s something very calming and relaxing about the music, even if the lyrics are not all that happy. It is a very personal album and not overly wordy; it does a great job of showing and not telling. “Revelations” is one of my favorite songs on this album and is a great example of this. The music never overwhelms the lyrics but provides the perfect accompaniment to the story. On the other hand, the lyrics do not feel like they are being shoved down your throat. It is a song full of meaning, packed to the brim with soul, and I highly recommend you listen to this one first.

“The Well” is another song from this album that I really love as well as “Weight of Time.” Even if you usually like other genres – or like me, stay away from folk – I highly recommend you check out Weight of Time. It will definitely give you a new perspective on the genre because Arran Fagan has done a phenomenal job putting this nine-track release together.
