The opening seconds of “Unwell” immediately made me want to jump into a crowd.
There’s something really fun about the way Vampires Everywhere! kick off their new single. It has that early-to-mid-2000s post-hardcore, metalcore, and goth-rock feeling that brings back the excitement of hearing a song start and instantly knowing you were about to get a banger. It’s energetic, a little nostalgic, and honestly just makes you want to move.

Released August 7, “Unwell” pulls directly from one of vocalist Michael Vampire’s longtime musical influences: Taking Back Sunday.
Vampire has been a fan of the band for years and even had the chance to tour with them during Warped Tour 2012. That connection makes the nostalgia behind “Unwell” pretty easy to understand.
“I am excited to keep rolling out new Vampires Everywhere! music! I have been sitting on these songs for quite some time and I’m stoked for you all to hear them! The next song is titled “Unwell,” which is greatly inspired by Taking Back Sunday. I’ve been a giant TBS fan for the longest time and had the opportunity to tour with them on Warped ‘12! I wanted to explore my roots and feel the nostalgia; if you know what I mean. As well as releasing some much needed demons from my heart’s chest! That being said, enjoy the track and I hope it helps you like it helped me!”

There’s definitely a throwback quality to “Unwell,” but the song still feels like Vampires Everywhere!. That darker, theatrical side is still there, while the overall energy makes this one feel especially fun.
The timing also fits into a pretty busy year for the band. “Unwell” follows “Your Black Heart” and “All My Friends Think I’m Weird,” along with the recently released “Dead In The Mourning Alive At Night,” which features Alesana vocalist Dennis Lee.
The collaboration with Lee was a big one for fans of the scene. It marked his first-ever collaboration and came alongside the first new music from Alesana in more than 10 years.
But “Unwell” takes things somewhere a little different. For Vampire, it was a chance to go back to the music that influenced him, bring some of that Warped Tour-era nostalgia into the present, and put some personal feelings into the song along the way.
And if you miss the days when a song could hit those first few seconds and make you want to throw yourself into the crowd, “Unwell” is going to feel very familiar.
“Unwell” is out now.
