Have you ever received a tour alert notification and just instantly screamed in excitement? It didn’t matter if you were in the middle of a store, picking up your child from school, or at work…you just screamed like no one was around? Well, that was me when I got the notification that one of my all-time favorite performers, the legendary Till Lindemann, was coming to my side of the world. Supporting Till on this tour were two incredible bands, Twin Temple and Aesthetic Perfection, which, in my opinion, couldn’t have been better choices for openers. The Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas, hosted the frenzy-filled night, and everyone inside that venue was beyond excited. As soon as I arrived, I grabbed my merch, knowing the line would be out the door if I waited any longer. We were the first stop of the tour so I knew there would most likely be a bit of chaos but it was essentially the perfect dose of chaos. Drinks were flowing, fans were staking out their spots on the floor, and the air buzzed with anticipation of what was in store for us.
First up was the Los Angeles trio, Aesthetic Perfection. Lucky for me, I had the chance to catch up with lead vocalist Daniel Graves a few days prior for a quick interview about the tour and new music, which you can check out **HERE.**. I just have to say…what a cool and down-to-earth guy Daniel is. After speaking with him, I gained a whole new level of respect not only for him but for touring musicians in general. It was a great conversation, and anyone reading this should absolutely check it out and give AP a listen. As soon as they hit the stage, the crowd welcomed them with open arms (and plenty of screams). I caught that moment of excitement from every single member on stage. AP played a quick set, which I honestly wished could have been longer…and I’m pretty sure the crowd felt the same. Every song was packed with energy, riffs, and the perfect touch of thriving pop. Daniel’s vocals are undoubtedly the standout feature, as he effortlessly shifts his tone between songs, delivering all the feels across synth, rock, pop, industrial, and more. Drummer Joe Letz and keyboardist/guitarist Constance Day, who usually perform with Aesthetic Perfection, are also members of Till Lindemann’s band. For this tour, they were temporarily replaced by the talented Brooke Colucci on drums and guitarist Noizith, both of whom were absolutely killer choices to fill in. The setlist for the night included hits like “Gods and Gold,” “Rhythm + Control,” “Summer Goth,” and more, and they couldn’t have nailed it any better. As expected, their performance was full of energy and definitely got the crowd pumped for the rest of the night.
Next up was Twin Temple, an American classic rock ‘n’ roll band with a rebellious, bluesy twist. Known for their Satanic and witchy lyrics and imagery, Twin Temple treats fans to their own little on-stage ritual during performances. As soon as I saw their stage setup…with an altar prominently displayed in the middle…I knew it was going to be a fun show. Everything about Twin Temple’s image screams vintage rock, from their fabulous attire to their theatrical presence and occult-themed lyrics. I have to say, I was pretty damn impressed. The iconic duo, Alexandra and Zachary James (yes, they are married), exuded romantic energy throughout their performance, and it was absolutely sensational. Both of them, along with the rest of the band, were spot-on with every note, blending seamlessly into the perfect mix of bluesy rock that fans love. Twin Temple played a set that included songs like “The Devil (Didn’t Make Me Do It),” “Be A Slut,” “Let’s Have a Satanic Orgy,” and more…each one eliciting its own unique fan reaction. What really stood out to me was their connection with the crowd. At one point, Alexandra pointed to a girl in the audience and tossed her the black rose she’d been holding since the beginning of the set, and the girl’s excitement was literally like a kid in a candy store. Overall, I absolutely loved Twin Temple’s performance. It was dark, sexy, and oozing of that old-school charm, and honestly… just a blast. This group really knows how to put on a great show, and their set perfectly matched the vibe of the whole show.
Finally, it was time for what most people came to witness…Till Lindemann. Many know him as the multi-Grammy-nominated frontman of Rammstein, but in 2015, unable to sit still, he launched his own solo project, *Lindemann*, alongside Peter Tägtgren. Their debut album Skills in Pills was a massive success, followed by F & M in 2019. After the duo parted ways, Till assembled a new, kick-ass band of talented musicians: Joe Letz, Danny Lohner, Jes Paige, Emily Ruvidich, and Constance Antoinette. Since the split, Till has released several singles and a full studio album, Zunge. I was absolutely thrilled to catch one of his solo shows, even though I had to drive almost four hours (thanks, Texas, for being so damn huge). But I was determined, and it had been a long time since I felt that level of excitement for a show. As the lights went dark, the venue erupted with screams. The band took the stage, and bright red lights and fog filled the room—that’s when I knew it was go-time. They kicked things off with “Zunge,” with Till standing perfectly still at the mic, dressed head-to-toe in red: painted face, red outfit, and a snazzy fur coat and hat. The 18-song setlist was nothing short of entertaining. When the intro to “Allesfresser” played, fans ran from the bar to get closer to the stage, because… it was time for cake. This song is infamous for the cake-throwing antics that follow. Each band member gets to toss a full cake into the crowd, with Till pointing out his target using a flashlight. If you’re in the path, there’s no escape. The crowd loved it, and so did the band. I always wonder how many cakes (and fish) they prepare for these shows (more on the fish later). I’m guessing it’s at least a dozen…
After the cake-fest, Till continued with “Golden Shower,” “Sport Frei,” “Blut,” and “Praise Abort,” each accompanied by its own amusing video on the large LED screen behind the band. Everything—the sound, the visuals, and Till being his usual wild self—had the crowd, including me, living for every second. During “Platz Eins,” things took a surprising turn. Till left the stage while the band kept playing. The next thing I knew, he was being carried through the crowd on a throne-like chair by security guards, singing as he went. The crowd surged around him in excitement, and the GoPro strapped to his head captured their reactions, which was broadcasted on the big screen. He returned to the stage just in time for another crazy moment during “Fish On,” when they re-enacted the cake throwing—this time with dead fish. Till pulled out a bowl of fish and a cannon, shooting them into the crowd. It was hands-down the wildest thing I’ve seen at a show. It was stinky, but absolutely hilarious. After that, the chaos settled as Till wrapped up the night with hits like “Steh Auf,” “Skills in Pills,” and “Knebel,” before closing the set with “Ich Hasse Kinder.” I have to say, this was by far the best and most entertaining show I’ve seen all year—and I’ve been to a *lot* of shows. Everything exceeded my expectations, and I didn’t want to miss a single second. It was that good. From the insane visuals to the energy each musician brought, Till’s wild antics, and everything in between, it was an unforgettable night. But a word of warning: his shows are not for the weak stomach. If you can’t handle bizarre footage, the smell of cake and fish, or a lot of nudity, you might want to sit this one out and leave it to the true fans. 😉
