Thanks for speaking with us! What are three words you’d use to describe your music for those just learning about it?
Soulful, groovy, catchy 🙂
You’ve said you enjoy writing about matters of the heart. What specifically pulled you toward writing Follow?
I was drawn to write about the paradox of doubting your inner voice, but going for it anyways, or more simply, following your heart. The theme came up after I wrote the first phrase of lyrics, an entry on my notes app: “surprised by the anger, inspired by forgiveness”. From that, I knew I wanted to write a song about empowerment, or better yet, courage. In the same way, courage is not about the absence of fear, but doing it despite the fear, if felt I couldn’t write this song without acknowledging the doubts and fear that many of us face on road to following our hearts.
I love what you said about trusting your gut and how this new song honors that. For those who believe in this but as you said, have a hard time enforcing it, what advice do you have?
My advice is that a lot things that help us grow make us feel uncomfortable, but it’s not a reason to not to do those things. More importantly, if you can’t do what’s right for you, how can you trust anyone else to?
There’s a gentle but powerful defiance in “Follow”, with choosing hope despite the odds. Was that intentional from the start or something that emerged through writing?
This theme definitely emerged as I started adding lyrics, particularly the phrase “surprised by the anger, inspired by forgiveness”. Once that was added, I knew I wanted to continue writing lyrics with that theme in mind .
When you perform “Follow” live, what do you hope the audience walks away feeling or thinking about?
I hope the audience receives a feeling of inspiration from the live performance. Like, “I got this!”. And if they walked away with the guitar hook stuck in their heads, that’d be fine too 🙂
If your younger self heard “Follow” today, what do you think they’d say?
Great song! I always liked reflective, moody music growing up. I think I’d especially love the textures on the track. Like the guitar hook and the sliding guitar in the bridge.
Though you’ve been in succesful bands before, this is your first time branching out as a solo artist, and “Follow” is only your second song after “nonissue” debuted earlier this year. Has the experience been what you expected?
I actually was a solo act in 2020-2022. I performed and released music as Conduit, where I would also hire other musicians to perform with me. In 2022 I also started a band, Community Sugar. The band was short-lived, but we did release a single together called ‘Move With You’.
Baileigh Jane is my second iteration of a solo project, and I have to say— I love it! I’m older and wiser and my approach to music is more… patient? Carefree? Not sure of the exact word, but it has been incredibly easy getting back into once I decided I was officially “going for it.”
Having been on both sides — more established as part of other acts and just starting out with your solo work — what advice would you give emerging artists wanting to make their mark while staying true to themselves?
As mentioned above, it’s not my first time as a solo artist. I would actually say, most of my previous credibility as a performing artist is through my solo project, Conduit.
That being said, I’m having a blast since rebranding my solo project. Some of the biggest takeaway I have: even if you’re a solo artist, perform with a band (it’s better stage presence and beats performing by yourself), work with others (maybe instrumentalist but also, photographers, producers, bookers, etc!), treat people kindly (the music business is a business about relationships, put your best foot forward and being easy to work with goes a long way).
What else do you have coming up this year? New singles? Tours?
I have 2 more singles after ‘Follow’ that will be released this summer followed by a EP release in August! My next show is a queer music showcase I’ve put together at Sour Mouse in NYC. The show is free to the public and starts at 6pm on 6/14!
Thanks for speaking with me! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Just thank you so much for the interview and sharing my music! ??
