Photos and Review: CRANKDAT in Los Angeles, California

Crankdat brought five straight nights of bass-fueled chaos to Los Angeles with a massive run at the Shrine Auditorium Expo Hall. Known for his hard-hitting blend of dubstep, bass music, and genre-bending electronic production, Crankdat has built a reputation for shows that are just as explosive visually as they are sonically. We were invited out for Friday night, the third show of his five-night takeover, and somehow, three nights in, there was no sign of him slowing down the pace.

Crankdat performed with the kind of energy that made it feel like he was experiencing every drop right alongside his crowd. Throughout the night, he jumped across the stage, climbed onto his decks, and threw himself into hyping up the room before sending thousands of fans straight into the next drop. His energy was infectious, and watching him rock a venue this size (for 5 nights in a row!) made it hard not to feel like he was born to do exactly this.

His iconic, unedited version of “STFU” sent his fans into a frenzy across the Expo Hall, while tracks like “TYPE SH*T” and “Bass Cannon (Flux’s Version)” kept the energy going. When he dropped his recent hit “Movement,” the entire venue transformed as bright green lasers exploded across the room with each beat drop, sparkling above the crowd and turning into a sea of green.

The production team itself deserves just as much recognition for their insane work! Lasers cut through the Expo Hall from seemingly every direction, perfectly timed with the music alongside bursts of pyro and other production elements that made each drop hit even harder. From the upper level of the Shrine, you could really appreciate the scale of what the production team had created. A double stack of lasers stretched across the venue, illuminating both the room and the massive crowd underneath in vibrant layers of light. There were moments where the best thing you could do was simply look around and take it all in. You have to hand it to the team behind the show; they put on one hell of a production!

As the night entered its final stretch, Crankdat had one more surprise waiting for the Los Angeles crowd. For the final 30 minutes, Crankdat welcomed Kai Wachi, a fellow bass music heavyweight known for his hard-hitting dubstep sound, to join him behind the decks for a surprise back-to-back set. Together, the fans jokingly nicknamed them “Crankwachi,” and the energy inside the Shrine somehow found another level.

One of the most memorable moments of the night came when the pair played their remix of “Hollow.” Thousands of voices roared the lyrics back toward the stage, loud enough to be heard over the music itself.

Three nights into a five-night run, Crankdat cranked LA with his best sets yet! Between his contagious stage presence, a crowd that matched his energy at every turn, an absolutely wild production, and a surprise closing set with Kai Wachi, Friday night showed exactly why Crankdat was able to turn one of Los Angeles’ most iconic venues into his playground for five nights straight! If Crankdat comes to a city near you, his show is one you won’t want to miss!
