After four dreadful consecutive days of rain and flash floods scattered across the entire Houston area, Motionless In White fans made their way (or some would say swam) to White Oak Music Hall for a sold out lawn of muddy goodness to finally enjoy this previously rescheduled concert.
Originally, the lineup consisted of opening bands including Knocked Loose, After The Burial, and Alphawolf. Due to… as usual… Houston’s inconsiderate weather plans, that particular show unfortunately led to a reschedule which brought us to now, months later with a new lineup including In This Moment, Kim Dracula, and Mikes Dead. Obviously the good ol’ Houston forecast decided to rain on this rescheduled parade as well, so many fans including myself were all on edge about what exactly was yet to come on that humid anticipated show. As I was making my way in the drizzly rain to the shenanigans, I got the text that In This Moment and Mike’s Dead dropped out of the show, so at this point I’m really contemplating on whether or not I should even keep driving or turn around. Those who know me, know I dread the case of major fomo, so I decided “screw it” and kept on my path to the venue. Man oh man did i not expect the craziness that endured that night. After getting my SUV stuck in a parking lot mud, being rained on, waiting an hour to get my media passes, and soaking my boots and socks in muddy water… I was finally in and the show was still on. Determination or just pure craziness? I don’t even know at this point but let’s just say there is more to come.

There were mixed feelings about In This Moment dropping off of the bill, many fans decided not to go, but there were many more who decided Motionless In White would make up for it, and I will admit… they did indeed do just that. VIP fans lined up 6+ hours before doors would finally open, so I think that was all it took for Motionless In White to stay and wait out the rain. They were clearly not leaving without a fight, and were determined to do this show, rain or not. I’ve been to many sold out shows in the lawn at White Oak Music Hall, but this crowd seemed way more massive. The GA line was absolutely the most insane line I’ve ever seen in my life. I was positioned on top of a hill so I could see the swarm of sweaty and some drenched humans slowly moving up to the entrance of the grounds. All these people, here to have a good ass time no matter what. That right there alone was a pretty cool thing to see. As the lawn was getting more and more filled by the minute, the sky finally started to clear up… so maybe this show is going to continue on? Honestly at this point I’m staying either way.. And that’s because I literally could not go anywhere due to my SUV being in a mud situation. It was finally time for the only opener who didn’t bail, Kim Dracula, to take the stage, and we weren’t even 100% sure it was going to happen since the start times kept pushing more and more later… But then we heard the screams of fans and I looked up and saw the band enter that stage… the relief I felt in that moment was one i havent had to feel in a long time. It was finally show time.
Australian alternative/indie artist Kim Dracula rocked his set with songs including his major breakthrough and Lady Gaga Cover “Paparazzi” along with tracks from his latest released album including “Drown” and “Make Me Famous”. This was the first time i’ve ever listened to or seen Kim Dracula before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect but man this guy is unique AF. At some point I was scratching my head and then found myself headbanging along with him. Kim Dracula has a dynamic fusion of sounds that mix between waves of punk, pop, alternative, and metal all stirred in together leaving raw and catchy hooks. It is different though, I feel like it’s the kind of music you either completely love or completely hate it… not much room for inbetween. It’s also kind of hard to explain it… as fan and concert goer Navi said “Kim Dracula is 100% who Marilyn Manson would be if he came out in this era of music” and it’s safe to say, I would absolutely have to agree. After releasing his second single ever “Seventy Thorns” with the iconic mastermind Jonathan Davis of Korn, Kim Dracula exploded into the music world and has been on the rise ever since.

With a good chunk of time between sets, Motionless in white was set to take the stage next, finally being able to really even do a good sound check as they were not able to do so with all of the weather related issues and VIP plans that had to be carried out… the crowds excitement and anticipation grew by the minute. Drinks were being poured, merch was being bought, fans were slipping down the muddy lawn hills (totally not funny – but also kind of is) . It was definitely an experience, that’s for certain, but everyone was genuinely happy, and definitely not letting it ruin their time. After what seemed life forever and a day, the lights finally went dark and it was officially Motionless in White time! The anticipation reached its peak, and fans were screaming at the top of their lungs as the band joined the stage. The lights flickered with pure vibrant colors to the opening chords that echoed throughout the air of the lawn and surroundings. Opening with “Meltdown”, “Signs Of Life”, and “Thoughts & Prayers”, Motionless In White was visibly stoked to be there, electrifying the stage and radiating with energy like I’ve never seen. It was almost as if they went through hell and back to be on this stage at this exact moment. Vocalist Chris Motionless Let out a huge sigh of relief, thanking the crowd for being there, and gave the sky the middle finger to let the world know… they were here and they were ready to really give this show their all. This obviously fed into the crowd’s energy even more, bringing in waves of cheerful screams. Look, I’ve been to a million shows and never in my life have I ever come across a band that was so determined as Motionless In White was that night and they without a sliver of doubt made every little challenge along the way WORTH IT. Continuing with fan favorite jams including “Reincarnate”, “Rats”, and my personal favorite “Another Life”, Each band member was mastering their instruments, feeding the crowd with intense and powerful rhythms and with every single song capturing everyone’s hearts and souls almost transporting us into another realm. It was one of the best shows I’ve been to in a long time. I could literally go on and on about how good it was. White Oak unfortunately has an early curfew when it comes to outside shows, so it really sucked we got a little less than an hour of Motionless In White, but as the last songs played and the final notes echoed into the night – the crowd was not ready to let it end, but did so with rounds of crowd surfers and headbanging to really put a kick-ass end to a kick-ass show.
Motionless In White really set the bar high that night and I feel a lot of other bands and artists should take some notes from their book. They really gave one hell of a show that will give us attendees a memory of a lifetime.
