LA’s Deathshine Are Ready to Make Some Noise

Deathshine packed Old Towne Pub on January 30, delivering a tight, loud set to a wall-to-wall crowd.

With the local LA metal band gearing up for their debut album, we caught up with them to talk about how they met, what shapes their sound, and what comes next.

How did you all meet each other?

I (Keefe) met Shane Meredith in gym class in 10th grade. He was sitting in front of the bleachers with his emo-ass hair in front of his face. He looked up at me and I wondered how he could even see me through that mop of bright red hair.

“Want to hang out?” I asked.

“Okay.” he said. And that was that.

We met Jamie Kirk way later (one year ago) through our current drummer, Chris Jobson, who lives above me in our apartment complex.

The one thing we all had in common? Our love for rippin’ face melting metal.

How would you describe your sound? Give me three words you would use to describe your sound?

People often tell us that we sound like if Metallica had a baby with The Sword but Mastodon came in and helped raise that baby.

We are the baby. The baby is us. Deathshine.

Seriously though, I try to blend my funk background in guitar with heavy riffs to give us a Groove Metal vibe. Hard hitting, but fun. Soul sucking but positive.

Three words to describe our sound.  Monumental (MonuMetal?), Groovy, Fun.

Who would you say your musical influences are?

Metallica, Mastodon, Gojira, John Frusciante, System of a Down, Coheed and Cambria.

Those are some of the biggest influences that I think you can pick out in the music. Obviously there are tons of others. Basically anything we’ve ever listened to in our entire lives.

What are you working on now?

Right now we are working on getting our first full length album, Invasive Species, ready for release. We have a few more vocals to record, but it’s basically all mixed and nearly ready to master.

We are also working on a more thrash-centric album and have most of the songs ready to be recorded.

What has been your favorite song to write so far? What about to perform?

“Cyclone” was 100% my favorite song to write so far and is our favorite song to perform. It is punchy, dynamic, and people love it.

What is your dream venue to perform in SoCal?

The absolute dream would be to play at Hollywood Palladium. I’ve seen a ton of amazing shows there and I just really love way it’s set up so you have a great view of the stage no matter where you are standing.

But until that’s on the table, we’d take anything! Being a band that is still getting their feet under them in the LA scene keeps us ready and raring to play wherever and whenever.

Where can listeners find your music?

We have three demo’s out right now that can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you like to stream. The album is going to sounds sick though and will hopefully be out by the end of April.

We also have a website www.deathshine.com Where you can listen to the songs, see our upcoming shows, or buy merch.
