Lacuna Coil: Most Powerful Performance of 2019

Who: Black Anima Tour, Lacuna Coil

Where: Soul Kitchen, Mobile, Alabama

When: September 21, 2019

Fans lined the street and wrapped around the Soul Kitchen waiting for Lacuna Coil to perform.  They were not disappointed, as the band delivered one of the most powerful performances of 2019.  The band was in Mobile, Alabama making a stop on their Black Anima Tour.

I was pretty excited to photograph this show.  It’s usually not the music that draws me to a band but rather the visual impact of the band.   I look for ones that are either very animated or who have a unique look, something that sets them apart visually from others. Bands like Avatar, Mac Sabbath, and GWAR come to mind.  Lacuna Coil certainly meets this criterion with a stunning lead singer in Cristina Scabbia, an animated co-lead singer in Andrea Ferro, and the rest of the band who wear white and black facial makeup, looking like skulls or demons.  This is what initially attracted me to Lacuna Coil.

Everything changed when Lacuna Coil walked out on stage and performed their first song, “Blood, Tears, Dust” from the Black Anima album.  Ferro started the song off in a typical metal death growl but then Scabbia took over with her haunting mezzo-soprano voice.  I was instantly mesmerized by her. The two alternated back and forth on lead for the entire song. It brought back memories of Linkin Park with Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda going back and forth. I was suddenly absorbed in the music rather than the look of the band.

On their second song, “Trip The Darkness“, Ferro’s voice unexpectedly switched to a cleaner vocal style showing he was capable of more than just screaming at the top of his lungs. After covering several metal and screamo bands, I’ve come to realize that most of these performers are very capable singers and Ferro and Scabbia are no exception. Their music was a wonderful blend of hard core metal and melodic vocals.  The two lead singers were perfect compliments to each other playing off of one another.

The show continued with the band performing songs from their Delirium, Dark Adrenaline, Karmacode, Broken Crown Halo, Comalies, Shallow Life, and Black Anima albums. Scabbia and Ferro continued alternating vocals with Ferro using a clean voice on some and a growl on others. Both singers gave performances filled with extreme passion and emotion. They provided me with some of my most powerful photos of the year.

I now have a new favorite female singer and her name is Cristina Scabbia.  Her performance was both chilling and inspiring. Since the show I have began to listen to more and more of Lacuna Coil’s music where I continue to be mesmerized by Scabbia’s voice.  It is definitely worth attending a Lacuna Coil show regardless of your musical genre preference.
