A casual phone call. A passing comment. And suddenly, a song is born.
“This song, [“Rains in Lisbon”] was born in Lisbon,” POLI NIKA says, “and there’s genuine serendipity to its creation.”
Known for her dreamy, cinematic soundscapes and tender storytelling, POLI NIKA weaves together elements of soul, jazz, and folk to create music that feels like a late-night call with your best friend; trusted, introspective, and full of heart. Drawing influence from artists like Lizzy McAlpine, Yebba, and Lianne La Havas, her music is tenderhearted, warm, and full of inspiration from life’s little moments. In fact, that’s how “Rains in Lisbon” came to be.
“It might never have existed if not for a casual conversation with Paul Statham, an accomplished songwriter and producer who’s worked with artists like Dido, Kylie Minogue, and many others,” POLI NIKA explains. “We were on a call…[when I mentioned the weather] to Paul, he paused thoughtfully and said, “Sometimes it rains in Lisbon.”
The line haunted her for days.
“It just sounded like a perfect song lyric.”
Where most people would have forgotten about the line, POLI NIKA couldn’t let it go. “It kept returning to me,” she says. “The melody and lyrics came together quickly, everything feeling organic and right. That’s one of the things I love most about songwriting – how inspiration can appear in the most unexpected exchanges.”
“Rains in Lisbon” is more than just a song. It’s a reminder of how inspiration can show up in the most unexpected moments. It also offers a perfect introduction to POLI NIKA’s heartfelt, soul-soaked sound. Her music lingers long after the last note, not just because of the lyrics or melody, but because it truly feels like something you can wrap your heart around.
“Rains in Lisbon” marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Lisbon based artist, with more music on the way throughout 2025.
