If you’ve ever wished your synth-pop had a bit more bite, Dilemma’s Velvet/Sundown might just be your new obsession. The EP, which was released today, feels like someone dropped a moody, neon-lit 80s arcade into a goth club and told everyone to dance like it’s their last night on Earth. With shimmering melodies and a cinematic edge, it’s a nostalgic love letter to the lone-wolf heroes we all secretly want to be.
“You may be interested to learn Sundown’s message is not actually a metaphor,” explains Dilemma. “The song is about the classic lone-wolf hero who takes it upon themselves to save everyone at great personal risk to themselves. Sundown was a case of when the random words I came up with when creating a melody ended up dictating the subject of the song. I had started with the lyrics, “Hero, I want to save you” and it made me think about the TV show Arrow which I was enjoying at the time. Sundown is one of two songs that inspired the ‘new wave’ vibe of External.”
The EP includes remixes with Ground to Dust, which adds something darker and grittier to the glimmering EP. Perfect for a late-night existential crisis. On the whole, Dilemma’s sound is a pop culture cocktail, blending the dark allure of Nine Inch Nails with the sleek, cinematic vibe of the Queen of the Damned soundtrack. But don’t let the brooding vibes fool you—this EP knows how to party, even if it’s in slow motion under flickering fluorescent lights. Velvet/Sundown is here to prove that synth-pop isn’t just alive; it’s thriving in the shadows.
