Cumbia Legends Los Mirlos Light Up San Diego With Dance-Fueled Mother’s Day Show

Los Mirlos at the Quartyard, San Diego. May 11, 2025

San Diego got a taste of history this past weekend when Los Mirlos brought their “Ayahuasca Tour” to Quartyard on Sunday night. The iconic Peruvian band—known for pioneering the hypnotic, tropical sounds of Amazonian cumbia—delivered an unforgettable, dance-heavy set that proved just how timeless their music is.

Formed in 1973 and named after the blackbirds of the Peruvian jungle, Los Mirlos are legends in theirhome country, and rightfully so. Over the past 50 years, they’ve carved out a legacy that spans continents and generations, blending Colombian cumbia, surf rock, Andean folk, and psychedelic flair into a signature sound that’s equal parts vibrant and transportive.

That signature style was on full display during their San Diego debut, which wrapped up a string of sold-out shows including a packed night at The Roxy in Los Angeles and a stop at Black Box in Tijuana. Their performance here capped off a landmark moment for the group: just weeks ago, Los Mirlos became the first Peruvian act ever to perform at Coachella in the festival’s 26-year history!

I was lucky enough to catch both the Coachella set and the San Diego show on the 11th, and let me tell you—these guys could’ve played for hours and no one would’ve complained. The energy was infectious from the first note. A mix of all ages and backgrounds filled the crowd, swaying and spinning to the grooves of the jungle.

Led by founding guitarist and organist Jorge Rodríguez Grández, the current lineup includes his two sons—Jorge L. Rodríguez (musical director, piano, and guitar) and Roger Rodríguez (vocals and güiro), who joins in from time to time—alongside Danny Johnston (lead guitar), Dennis Sandoval (bass), Carlos Rengifo (percussion), Genderson Pineda (drums), and Junior Soto (second vocalist). Together, they performed a 20+ song setlist that blended beloved originals like “La Danza de Los Mirlos” and “Lamento en la Selva” with psychedelic-tinged covers, each one more danceable than the last.

What makes Los Mirlos so captivating is more than just their sound—it’s their story. For decades, they’ve stayed true to their roots while pushing the boundaries of genre and rhythm. Their music has always been grounded in tradition, yet it feels remarkably fresh and dynamic live. Watching them perform is like stepping into a tropical dream that pulses with rhythm. A truly psychedelic experience in and of itself.

With over a dozen albums to their name and a growing global fanbase, Los Mirlos have not only shaped the sound of Chicha and Amazonian cumbia, they’ve ensured its future. The crowd in San Diego made one thing clear: that future is still burning bright—and dancing hard.
