Austin-based artist Susanna Lee isn’t just part of the city’s music scene—she’s helped shape it. With over a decade of contributions through long-standing residencies, community fundraisers, and leadership on the Austin Texas Musicians map board, Lee’s impact goes beyond the stage.
Now, she’s bringing that same heart and hustle to her latest single, “Lucky in Love,” a smooth, soul-drenched track that blends 90s R&B vibes with gospel warmth, funky basslines, and a message of faith, love, and personal power.
Rooted in both classical training and spiritual belief, Lee’s music is as intentional as it is groovy. We caught up with her to talk about the inspiration behind “Lucky in Love,” the role of manifesting in her creative process, and why staying in Austin—despite the lure of bigger scenes—was the choice that made her who she is today.
“Lucky in Love” has a great mix of soulful 90s vibes with a modern flare. What drew you to that sound for this single?
[A prompt I was given] had the word “fantasy” & since Mariah [Carey] is my fav, my mind went to that song, & then to Dreamlover. I aimed to make this song similar to that sound.
You describe the song as an anthem about faith, love, and manifesting dreams. What personal experiences inspired that message?
I’ve been taught to pray as if what I ask for is already here or on the way & I’ve seen this happen with regards to protecting my family’s health, healing chronic pain in my own body, etc. I have the most lovely friendships in my life & I’ve prayed for that. Many lifetime dreams have come true, also including the previous EP release show, which was so special & the upcoming album show.
The track blends funky bass, smooth guitar, and uplifting lyrics. How did the production process bring that vision to life?
I’m blessed with talented people around me who want to work with me. My bass player has access to my recording files & listens to what he could add his funkiness too. My producer is a multi-instrumentalist with a good ear & will suggest or add things for my approval.
You studied both classical music and contemporary voice at Berklee. How does having that more formal training influence the music you’re making now?
I feel better equipped to explore & create music on a level I otherwise wouldn’t have the knowledge or access to.
You’ve said you believe words can shape our lives, which I love and fully agree with! Can you share how that belief shows up in your songwriting?
This song for sure! Or a teaching song like Ubuntu on the album. Others are important to release feelings or just have fun.
Austin, TX, where you’re from, has such a rich and diverse music scene. How has the city influenced your artistry?
I’ve branched into other styles that I otherwise might not have. Though I rarely do country, it’s a part of this culture & so I have some under my belt. I’m glad it also has jazz, as that’s the vocal style I studied formally at Berklee. There’s as much or as little opportunity here to hone your craft based on mindset, you either make the decision to get out & do it, network, or don’t, and it’s amazing what can happen when you do show up & participate!
I’m always fascinated by how location impacts success. Do you think living in Austin has impacted the success you’ve had and connections you’ve made?
I honestly feel staying at Berklee would’ve possibly opened bigger network opportunities on bigger stages sooner as I’ve seen colleagues from there do. IE I went to school there with Mark, bass player for The Roots, but I made my choice to come back & do it here. I’m hustling for those as much as I know how & I believe anything is possible.
What do you hope listeners feel after listening to ” Lucky in Love”?
I hope it makes them feel lighter, hopeful, smile & say hey that’s catchy!
What’s next for you after this release?
Getting on SXSW, ACL stages, and possibly a small tour.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I’m grateful to be here & I hope I make your life greater.
