An Unforgettable Night of Metal with Killswitch Engage and Machine Head in Houston

After what felt like a week of nonstop rain, Saturday night couldn’t have come soon enough. Metal fans packed into Bayou Music Center in Houston, ready to trade the gloomy weather for a room full of loud guitars, circle pits, and sweaty strangers screaming every lyric at the top of their lungs. With a stacked lineup led by Machine Head and Killswitch Engage, the energy inside the venue was already through the roof before the lights even dropped. Every corner of the room was filled with anticipation, making for a packed house that was more than ready for an unforgettable night of heavy music. Killswitch Engage has been one of my favorite bands for years, so getting the chance to photograph them again was something I had been looking forward to ever since this tour was announced. There’s just something special about seeing a band you’ve loved for so long continue to put on a show that hits my little soul every single time.

Unfortunately, thanks to Houston traffic and a few other delays, I missed opening sets from Havok and Iron Reagan. From everyone I talked to throughout the night though, they absolutely killed it and did exactly what opening bands are supposed to do: get the crowd fired up for the chaos that was about to unfold. Once Machine Head hit the stage, it was officially go time. Headbanging, crowd surfers flying over the barricade, crushing riffs, and a room full of people completely losing their minds. Honestly, what more could you ask for on a Saturday night? This was actually my first time seeing Machine Head, and holy shit… I was not expecting them to be that good. Every member of the band is ridiculously talented, their sound was incredibly tight from beginning to end, and they know exactly how to grab your attention and never let go. The energy they brought to the stage was relentless, and the crowd matched it every step of the way. Their set was packed with heavy hitters including “Imperium” and “Game Over,” but one of the biggest moments of the night came when Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach joined them onstage for “Stop the Bleeding.” It was one of those collaborations you hope happens, and the Houston crowd absolutely ate it up. Closing things out with “Is There Anybody Out There?” before launching into the fan favorite “Davidian” was the perfect way to end an absolutely crushing set. From the first riff to the final note, Machine Head delivered one hell of a performance, and after finally seeing them live, I can confidently say it won’t be my last.

Next up was the band I had been waiting for all night, Killswitch Engage. I’ve been a fan ever since I was a teenager, so having the opportunity to photograph and cover them more than once over the years is something I’ll never take for granted. It’s a dream that so many music photographers hope to experience, and honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Jesse Leach continues to prove why he’s one of the best frontmen in metal. His vocal range is unreal, effortlessly shifting between punishing screams and soaring cleans, all while commanding every inch of the stage. Beyond his talent, you can tell he genuinely loves what he does. He constantly interacts with the crowd, cracks jokes, feeds off the audience’s energy, and somehow makes a packed venue feel personal. That connection is something not every band can create. The same goes for guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. If you’ve ever seen Killswitch live, you already know his personality is just as entertaining as his playing. Between his ridiculous stage antics, nonstop smiles, and effortless guitar work, he’s impossible not to watch. The chemistry between the entire band is something special, and it’s a huge part of what makes every Killswitch show feel different. They’re easily one of the most genuine, fun, and downright entertaining bands in metal today. Maybe I’m a little biased… but I stand by it. Their 16-song set was packed with songs that had the entire room screaming every word back at the stage. They tore through favorites like “A Bid Farewell,” one of my personal favorites, “In Due Time,” “Know Your Enemy,” and “The Signal Fire,” with circle pits opening up and crowd surfers continuing to pour over the barricade all night long. As the night came to a close, there was no better way to end it than with “My Curse” and “My Last Serenade.” Hearing an entire room belt out those choruses together is one of those moments that reminds you why live music is so special. The lights, the energy, the fans, and a band that’s somehow still performing with the same passion they had decades ago… it was the perfect ending to an incredible night. Killswitch Engage somehow manages to sound just as good, if not better, every single time I see them. If you’ve never caught them live, fix that. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
