Album Review: Violet Night Releases – ‘ANTIHEROES’

Alternative band Violet Night recently released its latest album, ANTIHEROES.  This is a follow-up to the band’s first album, Colours of You.  The band originating from Toronto, Canada includes vocalist/guitarist Connor Pohl, keyboardist T.J. Rounthwaite, and drummer Tay Ewart.

ANTIHEROES is a blend of Indie and Rock songs. The opening track, “stay golden; we’re all the same in the dark“, sets the tone for most of the album with its mellow Indie sound. The songs “evergreen“, “glow“, and “ANTIHEROES” continue this vibe. During the recording of album, the band realized it needed a little more balance. As Connor Pohl recalls, “The funny thing about A N T I H E R O E S is it was originally conceived as an EP. It leaned a lot heavier on the indie/alt side of our sound.  It took listening to it to realize something was missing – after all, indie and alt are prefixes to rock. Sure, we had added some industrial vibes on ‘freak me up’, but there simply wasn’t enough energy.”

Balance is introduced with the addition of a few up-tempo songs. “(if) you are the ocean (then) i would like to drown” has an Oasis feel with a hint of Sick Puppies thrown in. “hate me” is probably the strongest song of the album with the band displaying more of its rock sound with the addition of some distorted guitar. Pohl continued “To nod back to the title of our previous LP, Colours of You, we weren’t showcasing our full palette; it was a little monochromatic. We went back to the drawing board to write and record a few more rock-leaning songs, plus a bedroom demo.”

The band changes pace with “superbloom”. This is the outlier song of the album.  Pohl switches to acoustic guitar and serenades to a ¾ time swing strumming rhythm. He recollects “No, seriously, the original version of ‘superbloom‘ was me playing as quietly as I could to not wake up my Toronto roommates. We kept as much of that tender energy in the album version as we could, with the heavier stuff adding more than enough punch”.

Reflecting back Pohl says “Listening back now, I’m proud of what a well-rounded album we made.” While the album does have some balance, it’s still the Indie tracks and sound that sticks with me. If you are looking for music to just sit back and chill to, then this is an album you may want to check out.
