Album Review: Diamante – ‘American Dream’

On May 7, Diamante’s sophomore album, American Dream, will be coming out. This is a follow-up to her 2018 release, Coming In Hot. American Dream opens with the title track, immediately getting you pumped up for the rest of the album with a fast, catchy start. As soon as I heard this song the first time, I wanted to get up to jump and sing along. “Ghost Myself,” one of the singles released before the album came out, has a steady beat and the standout line “think I’ll take my heart and throw it off a cliff.” One of my favorites is “Serves You Right,” an emotional song that tells a story. The track came out about a year ago and it was one of my top singles from 2020. I had this song on repeat for a while, just absorbing it (and sometimes screaming along). I particularly love the closing lines of the song, “and I’ll be here patiently waiting, wishing and hoping and praying, that I’ll have a front-row seat when you sow what you reap.” The first single off the album, “Obvious,” has a haunting sound to it, and you can check out its music video here. “Unlovable” is a slower song, full of keys and highlighting Diamante’s shining vocals. Up next is “Wake Up Call,” a powerful, angsty anthem full of lines like “I am unbreakable, unbreakable because of you,” and “you can’t mess with my head no more.”

In “Unf*ck You,” Diamante gets to show off her vocal talent, with a fitting rapped verse in the bridge. “I Love Myself For Hating You” is another of my favorites on American Dream. It’s an empowering track about getting over those who’ve hurt you, and being better off for it. Also included on the album is a dramatic cover of Goo Goo Doll’s “Iris” featuring Benjamin Burnley from Breaking Benjamin. “Hopeless” starts off slow, before picking up with the second verse. American Dream wraps up with a soulful, acoustic version of “Obvious.”

Altogether, American Dream is a great rock and roll album, full of powerful, upbeat anthems. You should definitely listen to every song on it, but make sure to check out “American Dream,” “Serves You Right,” and “I Love Myself For Hating You.” Diamante has been working hard in the scene for years, and this album is proof of all that dedication.
