Who: Alec Benjamin
Where: Hawthorne Theater Portland, Oregon
When: May 3, 2019
“I love Portland and I genuinely think it’s a very special city. I was walking around with my guitar outside before the show, and this girl saw me and says ‘Oh. I have my maracas with me in my bag, do you want to jam?’ And if I didn’t have to go onstage in a few minutes I totally would have. What other city has people carrying maracas with them?”
Alec Benjamin expressed his love of Portland multiple times during the set, and the audience showed their love for the artist well before the show had even started. Show-goers lined up around the block well before the Hawthorne Theatre opened their doors to the sold-out show, and packed the over-capacity venue. Aside from when Alec Benjamin premiered a new song, the room was loud with screams, the crowd singing along to every word and raining love and compliments on the artist. It was the most welcoming and positive concert experience with one of the most caring and devoted fanbases.
Alec Benjamin’s stage presence is charming and thoughtful. His lyrics of social anxiety and rejection resonate with his audience while having a kind and awkward demeanor. Often stumbling through his breaks between songs, he lights up the room with laughs and puts a smile on everyone’s face. Alec Benjamin makes a sold-out show feel personal and intimate, with his young and comic attitude he tells stories and jokes between songs in his set.
Alec Benjamin’s first headline tour was a complete success, with sold-out dates across the country, and it definitely won’t be his last. With an adoring fanbase, natural musical talent and stage presence, Alec Benjamin is an artist on the rise and to watch.
