Concert Crap: You’ve been around music for a long time since both of your parents are classical musicians; was there ever a time you wanted to stray away from music completely?

C Duncan: I have always loved listening to and writing music. My parents never pushed me to become a musician – although they did encourage me, so I never felt at all forced into it. And having such musical parents I guess it was inevitable that I’d follow in their footsteps.

CC: Being an artist and composer do you find that your artwork inspires your music or vice versa?

CD: Very much so. My music and art are completely intertwined. I have a strong sense of place/geographic location in my head when I’m writing music and I express this through my paintings.

CC: Who are some of your biggest influences and inspirations?

CD: I’m influenced by all sorts, so I’ll just give you a few.

Musicians – Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Julia Holter, Burt Bacharach, and Maurice Ravel.

Artists – Grant Wood, Patrick Caulfield, Tamara de Lempicka, Gerhard Richter, and Wayne Thiebaud.

Films and TV – Anything by David Cronenberg and of course, “The Twilight Zone”.

Authors – James Baldwin, Kurt Vonnegut, Shirley Jackson, Charles Beaumont, and Daniil Kharms.

CC: What are some differences between your most recent album The Midnight Sun and last year’s album Architect?

CD: I was learning to record and produce when I made Architect whilst also trying to find my voice. As a result it is a very stylistically varied album which is made up of stand alone tracks. The Midnight Sun is much more coherent. It has a line and undercurrent throughout the whole thing which makes it more of an album and not just a random selection of songs. I had found the style that interested and worked for me most by the time I started to write and record The Midnight Sun.

CC: Recently, you performed at festivals in the UK and Europe. Do you have any plans or wish to visit North America for a tour?

CD: I would love to tour North America. Hopefully at some point in the next year I will get the chance to come across to perform!

CC: Is there anything else you would like to add to your fans or anyone reading this?

CD: Thanks for listening to my music! And hope you have a nice Christmas and New Year.
